The means for compensating for expansion movements of a pipeline (1) in critical expansion zones (D1, D2) of a pipeline (1) which is laid in the ground (3) comprises a sheath (2) consisting of closed-cellular, compressible material whose supporting intrinsic strength can be increased by the compression pressure of the ground (3). In this case, the sheath (2) has a circular cross-section in the unloaded state. The sheath (2) is furthermore connected to the pipeline (1) at its ends by collar means (5), such that it is sealed against earth penetrating into it. <IMAGE>
