The ortho-alkoxy-substituted 2-haloacetanilides correspond to the formula: <IMAGE> They are prepared by reacting a compound of the formula: <IMAGE> with a compound of the formula R4OH. In the formulae, R, R1, R2, R3, R4, X, X1 and n have the definitions given in Patent Claims 1 and 14. The compounds of the formula I have a herbicidal action and can be used as active substances in herbicides. They are suitable for the selective control of unwanted plant growth in the cultivation of crops, for example monocotyledon crops, such as wheat, sorgum and rice, and dicotyledon crops, such as sugar-beet and soya beans, in agriculture.
