PURPOSE:The titled particle capable of forming a high-strength, beautiful, smooth-surfaced molding having a large number of cells and being formable in a shortened ageing time and molding time of expandable particles, prepared by using a styrene resin having copolymerized maleimide. CONSTITUTION:An expandable styrene resin particle containing a styrene resin and an organic blowing agent (e.g., butane) wherein said styrene resin comprises an expandable styrene resin particle prepared by copolymerizing a styrene monomer with a maleimide (e.g., N-laurylmaleimide) of the formula (wherein R is a 1-24 C aliphatic hydrocarbon) in the presence or absence of a styrene polymer so that the maleimide content of the resulting styrene resin may be 0.01- 2wt% based on the resin. This particle has an advantage that when expanded, the foam has many cells, the ageing time and molding time of the expandable particles can be shortened because of the increased number of cells and, in addition, the strength of a foam is increased, and its surface is smooth and beautiful.
