The invention relates to a lantern wheel provided with toothing for the engagement of a gear, in which wheel the teeth and tooth gaps are divided at a predetermined pitch by openings aligned perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the lantern wheel. In order to create a stable lantern wheel with open tooth gaps of simple construction, the invention proposes that the lantern wheel be formed from two profile sections running parallel to one another at a distance, which sections each have a leg aligned in the plane of the gear, that openings be made in these legs at the pitch spacings, that between the two profile sections tooth elements be arranged which at their ends run out into offset retaining lugs, that the retaining lugs of the tooth elements be introduced into the openings of the profile sections and that by deformation of the parts of the retaining lugs projecting from the openings the tooth elements and the profile sections be connected to one another.
