PURPOSE:To obtain a double carbide of titanium carbide suitable for use as a sintered hard material by heating a mixture composed of specific titanium carbide, an oxide of a metal except titanium and titanium carbide in an inert atmosphere or under reduced pressure. CONSTITUTION:A mixture composed of titanium carbide with a theoretical carbon bond quantity or below, an oxide of a metal except titanium and titanium carbide is heated in an inert atmosphere and/or under reduced pressure. The titanium carbide used contains preferably a small amt. of >=1 kind among halogen, free carbon and oxygen. The titanium carbide to be used is preferably the titanium carbide produced by using halide, more particularly chloride of titanium as a raw material. The halide of titanium, for example, TiCl4, TiCl3, TiCl2, TiBr3 or the like is heated together with a reducing material to 700-1,100 deg.C in the presence of a carbonaceous material to titanium carbide. Bonded carbon (20.05 wt% theoretical carbon content) is contained at 13-19wt% in the resulting titanium carbide, and free carbon, oxygen, halogen and further the used reducing agent, etc. are contained therein. |
