Appts. for reducing the width of a metal strip(21) includes a pair of edge rolls(22a,22b) oriented to compress the strip across its width. Each roll has a circumferential groove bounded by a pair of flanges of sufficient magnitude to prevent thickening of the strip at the edges. Pref. a control system regulates the roll gap in accordance with a template (21a). The gap is adjusted by hydraulic jacks acting on the roll mounts. The template may be followed by, and the roll gap sensed by, differential transformers. The width-reduced strip is intended for the manufacturing of tapered leaf springs.
