PURPOSE:To improve the quality of a billet by disposing level detectors for the billet near the outlets of water-cooled casting molds and detecting upper and lower air gaps, then controlling the position of pinch rollers, thereby eliminating the difference between the upper and lower gaps. CONSTITUTION:Position detectors 3, 3 for detecting the upper and lower levels of the billet B are disposed near the outlets of the water-cooled casting molds 2, 2. A contact type or non-contact type having >=10mu resolving power is used for the detectors 3. The position signals S1, S2 from the detectors 3 are inputted to a control device 4 from which a control signal S3 is outputted if the air gap difference is detected. A driving device 6 is operated by such control signal S3 to move the upper and lower pinch rollers 5, 5 upward or downward, by which the air gap difference of the billet is eliminated. The movement of the solidification point of the billet is thereby prevented and the quality thereof is improved. |
