PURPOSE:To obtain a plated steel sheet for can making having high performance at a low cost by forming a specific Fe-Sn alloy layer and a hydrated chromium oxide layer on one surface of the steel sheet and forming specific Sn plating layer, metallic Cr layer and hydrated chromium oxide layer on the other surface. CONSTITUTION:An Fe-Sn alloy layer having a thickness of 0.1-0.7g/m<2> in terms of Sn and a hydrate chromium hydroxide layer having a thickness of 2- 15mg/m<2> in terms of Cr are formed on one surface of a steel sheet. A free Sn layer, an Sn plating layer having 0.1-12g/m<2>, a metallic Cr layer of 2-40mg/m<2> and a hydrated chromium oxide layer having 2-15mg/m<2> in terms of Cr are formed on the other surface of the steel sheet. The surface formed with the Fe-Sn alloy layer is used as the outside surface after can making whereby paintability is improved and the corrosion under the paint coated film is suppressed. The surface formed with free Sn and metallic Cr is used as the inside surface, thereby the corrosion resistance is improved.
