PURPOSE:To obtain a soluble high polymer of diisopropenylbenzene in good yields, by polymerizing a diisopropenylbenzene oligomer using a cationic polymerization catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A diisopropenylbenzene oligomer is prepared by, for example, a method wherein diisopropenylbenzene is brought into contact with acid clay or a cation exchange resin. The produced diisoprophenylbenzene oligomer is dissolved in an organic solvent (e.g., toluene) and polymerized in the presence of a cationic polymerization catalyst (e.g., AlCl3 or BF3-ethyl ether complex). The polymer solution is washed with aqueous hydrochloric acid or the like, and neutralized with an aqueous alkali solution. The polymer is separated from the solution by evaporation of the solvent or precipitation in a poor solvent for the polymer, such as methanol, and recovered to obtain the purpose high polymer.
