An electrical luminous element in the form of a candle, for example for Christmas trees, in which the candle shaft (2) is constructed to accommodate an electrical current source, e.g. a battery (9), there being arranged in the region of each end of the candle shaft (2) in the interior thereof an electrical contact (6, 7, 8) which is connected in each case to a terminal end of the incandescent filament (5). Arranged between the current source (9) in the installed state thereof and at least one of the contacts (6 or 7, 8) in an electrically conductive connection is an electronic making and breaking unit (11) which can be remotely operated by a pulse of radiation, e.g. an ultrasonic or infrared beam. It is thereby possible for the luminous element to be manipulated and used independently of line connections with other luminous elements of the same type, and thus substantially more freely. <IMAGE>
