The speeds of the gearbox input shaft (16) and the gearbox output shaft (24) of, typically, a road vehicle are sensed by sensors (26, 28). The signals from the sensors are then processed, and combined (at 34) to provide a signal representative of the ratio of input shaft speed to output shaft speed. This signal is displayed by a device (36), which in the illustrated form has a pointer moving over a scale whose marks (38) correspond to the actual gear ratios available. Thus the driver of the vehicle can tell when the input and output shaft speeds are correct for engaging a particular gear. |
