PURPOSE:To obtain resorcin in high yield, by decomposing m-diisopropylbenzene dihydroperoxide, obtained by oxidizing m-diisopropylbenzene, and containing an oxidation by-product with an acid in the presence of a heteropolyacid as a catalyst under specific conditions. CONSTITUTION:m-Diisopropylbenzene dihydroperoxide, obtained by oxidizing m- diisopropylbenzene, and containing an oxidation by-product, e.g. m-(2-hydroxy-2- prophy)-alpha,alpha-dimethylbenzyl hydroperoxide, is decomposed with an acid in the presence of a heteropolyacid, particularly molybdophosphoric acid, molybdosilicic acid, tungstophosphoric acid or tungstosilicic acid as an acid decomposition catalyst at 40-110 deg.C, preferably about 50-100 deg.C under refluxing conditions until the acid decomposition ratio becomee 92-99.5 equivalent %, preferably about 94-99 equivalent % to give the aimed resorcin in high yield. |
