A battery charger has a casing (1, Fig.1) which receives a battery K (or 4, Fig.1) to be charged, and internal charging circuitry within the casing can operate from any AC mains input voltage in a range of 90 to 250 volts, so that the charger can be used in different countries. The casing has a plug (2, Fig.2) for connection to an AC mains power socket, the plug (2) being pivotable through 90 degrees between a retracted position and an extended position. A further connector J1 is provided on the casing so that the charger can operate from a vehicle supply. The charger circuitry includes an overvoltage and over current protection circuit A connected to the AC mains plug, an EMI filter B, an oscillator and voltage stabilizing circuit C, D which drives a step-down transformer T1, a rectifier and smoothing circuit E, G, a vehicle supply input circuit F, a sensing circuit H, and a charging current interruption circuit I which turns off the charging current when the circuit H senses that the battery K is fully charged. A red LED2 indicates that the battery is being charged, and a green LED1 indicates that the battery is fully charged. The charger can charge nickel hydrogen or lithium ion batteries, and may be used to charge a battery of a micro mobile telephone. |
