In order to be able to soft-anneal pipes in a continuous furnace without a blanketing gas atmosphere and to remove the resulting decarburised pipe surface layers easily even from the pipe inside, a pipe charge is passed through two zones located one behind the other in the direction of passing through the furnace chamber. During the residence time of the pipe charge in the two zones, the latter are closed in front of and behind the pipe charge and separated in the region of the pipe charge, except for the cross-section thereof, and an oxidising gas, which effects oxidative scaling of the decarburised metal surface layers, is circulated from one zone to the other through the pipes of the pipe charge.
