The invention relates to an automatically actuated steady rest for supporting a round body, in particular a shaft, on machine tools, in particular external cylindrical grinding machines, with two or three steady-rest shoes. The steady rest is characterised in that two or three slides are displaceably guided in guide bores in a housing, the displacement movements of the slides are synchronised by connecting members in engagement with them, the steady-rest shoes are arranged on pivotably mounted steady-rest arms frictionally connected to the allocated slides via coupling members, and one of the slides can be driven by means of a threaded spindle by a controllable servomotor. The steady rest guarantees high repetitive accuracy. The movement of the steady-rest shoes takes place uniformly.
