Azetidine compounds of general formula

or an acid addition salt thereof, wherein R represents a hydrogen atom or an acyl group; R<1> to R<6> are hydrogen, alkyl, aryl or other groups; and Z is a carboxyl group or a derivative thereof, have useful properties by rendering the anthers of plants sterile. By cross-pollination F1 hybrid seed may thus be prepared. The compounds may be prepared by hydrolysis/alcoholysis of the corresponding nitrile compounds, which are also novel.
