In a device for retaining the mast (2) of a surfboard (1), the holding member (21) connecting the mast foot to the latter consists of two components (22, 23) which can be plugged one into the other and which can be firmly connected to one another by means of a lockable positive coupling (24) designed in the manner of a bayonet fastening. One of the components (22) is attached fixedly to the surfboard (1), and the other component is connected to an intermediate member (cap 6) fastened to the sleeve (3). This design makes it possible, by means of a rotational movement of one component, to fasten the mast foot to the surfboard (1) quickly and safely or to release this connection, without constructional changes having to be made. Furthermore, the effort needed for this is only slight. <IMAGE>
