Prodn. of H2 is effected by electrolysis of an aq. electrolyte using an electrode with a monolithic structure having a beta-phase Raney Ni/Mo/Ti surface layer formed by leaching 75-95% of the Al from an integral surface layer of an alloy of formula MAl3 (where M is a combination of 75-94wt.% Ni, 5-20wt.% Mo and 1-5wt.% Ti). The inclusion of Ti gives a lower hydrogen overvoltage at high current densities (e.g. 200 mA/square cm) than is obtainable with the cathodes of US248895. |
