摘要 <p>PURPOSE:To regenerate a trap at right time and consequently prevent burner fuel from being wasted by a method wherein the amount of particulates caught in a trap is judged based upon the ratio of the difference between pressures before and after the trap to a pressure on the inlet side of the trap and the ratio of a pressure on the outlet side of the trap to that on the inlet side of the trap. CONSTITUTION:The exhaust gas purifying device of an internal combustion engine consists in catching particulates in exhaust gas by means of a trap 4 arranged in an exhaust gas passage 1. When the difference between pressures before and after the trap 4, which is calculated at a control device 23 inputted with the outputs of respective pressure sensors 21 and 22 on the inlet and outlet sides of the trap 4, exceeds a predetermined value, a burner 5 for regenerating the trap 4 is put into actuation in order to incinerate caught particulates. In this case, the control device 23 calculates the ratio of the difference between pressures DELTAP before and after the trap 4 to a pressure P1 on the inlet side of the trap 4 or the ratio of a pressure P2 on the outlet side of the trap 4 to the pressure P1 on the inlet side of the trap 4. When said ratio exceeds a predetermined value, an output device 27 puts a relay 19 for a fuel pump, a fuel injection valve 10 and the like into actuation in order to start the combustion of the burner 5.</p>
