A process for rough machining and finishing a workpiece on a lathe, wherein a headstock centre displaceable in the axial direction and a further centre on the working spindle as well as face drivers displaceable in the axial direction and a clamping chuck are provided in order to lift the workpiece from the working spindle centre by means of the face drivers, and to drive it by the clamping chuck, for the rough machining, whereas during finishing the workpiece is held between the centres and is driven by the face drivers.
