The coal is mixed with a carrier liquid such as water and/or oil, thus forming an emulsion, and for this purpose the fuel emulsion is sprayed through an approximately annular inlet opening (10) into a combustion chamber (22), so that a flow profile approximately like a hollow cone arises. A reduced pressure (region 60) is built up within this flow profile, directly behind the fuel emulsion inlet opening (10) which opens into the combustion chamber (22), so that a portion of the hot combustion gases and a residue of unburnt fuel particles are recirculated (64) to the inlet opening. Moreover, gas inlet openings (12,14,16,18,20), through which gas or air flows out, are provided in the end (42) of the combustion chamber (22), with their flow path running helically and concentrically with the axis (40) of the inlet opening (10) which opens into the combustion chamber (22) for the fuel emulsion. Thus the fuel emulsion sprayed into the combustion chamber (22) undergoes a rotational motion, so that the flow profile like a hollow cone undergoes a strong fanning out or broadening out into a bell-shaped or apple-shaped profile (66). By the stated measures, an extremely long particle path (68) on the shortest length along the mid-axis (40) of the combustion chamber can be ... Original abstract incomplete. <IMAGE>
