The invention relates to a process for the preparation of tert-butanol by oxidation of isobutane in liquid phase and decomposition of the hydroperoxide produced thereby, according to which the oxidation of the isobutane takes place without the addition of catalysts and with conversions of 48 to 90% and subsequently the produced hydroperoxide is treated under hydrogenating conditions.
