PURPOSE:To increase the performance, the life and the reliability of a fuel cell by mixing powder of a phosphoric-acid resisting matter and powder of a metal phosphate, being followed by adding phosphoric acid to the mixture before it is kneaded. CONSTITUTION:After powder of a phosphoric-acid resisting matter and powder of a metal phosphate are mixed, phosphoric acid is added to the mixture before it is kneaded. For instance, the phosphate of at least one metal chosen from among Zr, Ti, Sn, Si, Al, Mg, Ca, Hf, Ge and the like used as a metal phosphate 2 is pulverized, then this is mixed with powder 1 of a matter having a high phosphoric-acid resistance such as silicon carbide or zircon. Next, phosphoric acid is added to the mixture before it is kneaded into a paste, followed by solidifying the paste to make a phosphoric-acid holding matrix 5. After that a fuel cell is assembled by placing the matrix 5 between an anode 3 formed by providing a carbon catalyst layer supporting platinum on carbon paper and a cathode 4 formed in the same manner as the anode 3. |
