Preparations and methods for using them when modulating animal cell reactions. The preparations comprise, as an active agent, an effective quantity of an 8-substituted guanine derivative which is bonded 9-1' to an aldose having 5 or 6 carbon atoms in the aldose chain. The preparation comprises a diluting quantity of a physiologically acceptable excipient. The guanine derivative is free of electrically charged functionality, and the 8-substituent has a greater electron-attracting inductive effect than hydrogen and contains fewer than approx. 15 atoms. Animal cell reactions are modulated by contacting the cells with a preparation according to the invention.
