The intake air flow through the air intake duct of a diesel engine with fuel injection is controlled by an intake air control valve, which can be moved to and fro between a fully opened and a fully closed state. A stop element limits the movement of the control valve in the direction of its fully closed state. This stop element is capable of being moved to and fro between a first stop position, in which the control valve can move into a first fully closed position, in which the air intake duct remains slightly opened, and a second stop position, in which the control valve can move into a second fully closed position in which it moves the stop element into its first stop position when the diesel engine is in operation and into its second stop position when the diesel engine is switched off. When the diesel engine is operating a valve control system opens the intake air control valve from its fully closed position as a function of the quantity of fuel injected. During operation of the engine, therefore, a suitable throttling of the air intake duct can be achieved in order to reduce noise or reverberation effects and to achieve a good engine braking characteristic. Whilst the engine is switched off, the air feed to the engine can be shut off almost completely, as a result of which the vibrations occurring ... Original abstract incomplete. |
