Manufacture of braided twines or twisted ropes comprises (a) forming ropes of heat-contractable filaments around cores contg. thermoplastic materials; (b) extending them; and (c) treating ropes at such a temp. that thermoplastic core materials are melted and the heat-contractable filaments are not melted, where the melted thermoplastic materials pass into the openings of filaments and block them up.
