The unit includes an optical speed sensor which comprises a light source and a photoelectric cell placed near an engine driven disc having alternating light and dark areas. The resulting pulses provided by the photoelectric cell are amplified, and shaped before being applied to a frequency-voltage converter. A sensor analyses the intensity of light, e.g. within a vehicle, and a controller regulates the intensity of a speed display accordingly. The display may simply consists of a three colour unit, or a graduated scale using LED's, neon, or incandescent lights. - A thermometer may also be included to monitor the temp. of the engine, the risk of ice, or the risk of diesel fuel solidifying. Various warning lights may indicate the measured temp.
