The invention relates to oxidation dye compositions containing oxidation dye precursors and at least one N-substituted ortho-nitraniline of formula: <IMAGE> where R1 denotes an alkyl or mono- or polyhydroxylated alkyl group, R2 hydrogen or an amino, mono- or dialkylamino, mono- or di(mono- or polyhydroxyalkyl)amino, (N-alkyl, N-hydroxyalkyl)amino, alkoxy, mono- or polyhydroxylated alkoxy or aminoalkoxy group and R3 hydrogen or an alkyl group, at least one of R2 and R3 being different from H, provided that if R1 denotes -CH2CH2OH, R2 cannot be di(monohydroxyalkyl)amino, in a non-ammoniacal reducing alkaline medium containing a bisulphite and an alkanolamine according to the main patent application, which compositions contain, by way of N-substituted ortho-nitraniline of formula (I), 2-N-methylamino-5-(N-methyl-N- beta , gamma -dihydroxypropyl)aminonitrobenzene and a non-ammoniacal reducing alkaline medium containing an alkali metal or ammonium bisulphite and at least one alkanolamine chosen from N-(C1-C4alkyl)ethanolamines, N,N-di(C1-C4alkyl)ethanolamines, di(C2-C3hydroxyalkyl)amines, 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol, 2-dimethylamino-2-methyl-1-propanol, 2-amino-2-ethyl-1,3-propanediol, 2-amino-2-methyl-1,3-propanediol and 2-amino-2-hydroxymethyl-1,3-propanediol. Use for dyeing keratinous fibres and in particular human hair.
