The apparatus consists of a lifting and grasping device mounted on a carriage (6) made up of a hydraulic motor (5), of a connection helix (7), and of a telescopic clamp (8) actuated by a jack (9), the whole unit being suspended from a support section (2) and being capable of rotating about a pivot (1). The main characteristics are a totally hydraulic operation, by virtue of which it is possible, on the one hand, to obtain great reliability, and, on the other hand, to be able to adjust the speeds continuously and to have a clamp with adjustable clamping force. <IMAGE>
