Water softening apparatus

In a water softening apparatus, a brine pipe 8, 9 is provided between a salt container 1 and a softener container 14, in which brine pipe is situated a controllable valve 10. In order in this case to ensure that the valve does not leak because of salt crystals, a section 9 of the brine pipe 8 is designed to be inclined downwards. The valve 10 is situated in this case in the pipe section 9 at a height above the bottom of the salt container 1 in which, at normal ambient temperature no recrystallisation of salt from the brine occurs.
