Mouldings of high bending strength, based on alkali metal silicates, can be prepared by casting or pressing and hardening by heating from water-containing moulding compositions which are formed from an oxide mixture containing amorphous silica and alumina as well as, if appropriate, as a further component, water-containing amorphous dispersely pulverulent silica, dissolved SiO2 and alkali from alkali metal silicate solutions, if appropriate alkali metal hydroxide or aqueous solutions thereof and, if appropriate, fillers, by mixing with stirring.
