A suspension preferably consisting of abrasive and water is extracted from a treatment station especially by means of vacuum and filled into a stock tank (7). The latter has a hopper-like shape, so that the solid constituents of the suspension can settle downwards along the hopper wall. Especially in the region of the tip of the hopper, compressed air is introduced which whirls up the constituents of the suspension and thus ensures a uniform distribution of the solids in the liquid. Depending on the air pressure or on the air rate introduced, the solids content in the suspension can be varied under control and held at the preset level. Advantageously, the extracted suspension is collected in a vacuum vessel (4) and released at a preset rate. For this purpose, not only the vacuum is broken, but additionally compressed air is introduced via a line (9) into the vacuum vessel (4).
