<p>_ 21 _ DEVICE FOR PRE-SELECTING THE EFFECTIVE OPERATION OF SOME OF THE CYLINDERS IN A MULTI-CYLINDER ENGINE . This device is for use on a multi-cylinder engine which includes a carburetor having two or four barrels. Half of the barrels are operatively connected to half of the cylinders which operate in a normal manner. The other half of the barrels is operatively connected to the remaining cylinders and is provided with means whereby the volumetric efficiency of this other half of the cylinders may be selectively varied from complete inoperation, in stages up to full operation. This was accomplished by the installation of an apertured plate between the carburetor and the intake manifolds, there being an aperture for each barrel of the carburetor. In one half of the apertures, a cylindrical sleeve is located into which may be placed a solid plug for complete inoperation of these cylinders or an apertured plug if partial operation is required. The size of the aperture in the plug controls the volumetric efficiency of the cylinders operatively connected thereto so that, for example, an eight cylinder engine can operate as though it was provided with four, five; six, seven or eight cylinders by choosing the relative plug to be fitted within the cylindrical sleeve.</p> |
