A torch for the electrical (arc) machining of metal workpieces, by melting, such as welding or cutting, comprises a rigid rod 14A made from a good conducting material, such as copper, and pierced through by a channel enabling a gas and, optionally, a filler metal wire to be fed into the welding zone. The torch is mounted on the end of the rod and is electrically insulated from the latter by means of an alumina coating which laterally covers this rod. This coating is formed by electrolytically depositing aluminium onto the copper with subsequent oxidation of the aluminium. Preferably, a similar deposition is made on the external face of a diffuser 24A which is coupled to the end of the rod 14A via which the gas is fed into the nozzle. Very simple manufacturing method for a torch displaying excellent performance by virtue of the high quality of the electrical insulation of the alumina and its ductility. <IMAGE>
