The arrangement improves the performance of an I.C. engine while reducing the tendency to knock, and use an exhaust system for reducing the amount of residual gas left in the cylinder charge. The residual gases have a lower pressure on the inlet valve opening, so that a smaller quantity flows to the inlet valves or remains in the combustion chamber when the exhaust valve shuts. By using this arrangement, the compression ratio can be increased and a petrol of lower octane number can be used.
