Sewing machine work presser appts. comprises a presser foot(22) attached to the bottom and of an axially movable presser bar(20), which is urged downwards by a constant-force spring(55) whose resilient force remains constant within a certain range of deflection. The spring comprises a closelywound coil portion(56) with end arms(57) resp. pivotally attached to the presser bar and the machine frame, the whole spring being of an arcuate shape. Work thickness variations do not alter the force of the spring.
