The motor vehicle has a steering device which monitors the actual position of the vehicle and compare it with a programmed desired travel path. The vehicle is automatically steered in response to a continuous assessment of the difference between the actual position and the desired path. The actual travel path is monitored without the use of guidance cables etc.A gyroscope (40) may be used to set a datum direction and accelerometers used to monitor the acceleration of the vehicle so as to establish its position.
