To obtain a stress-free rolled strip, a six-high stand with axially displaceable intermediate rolls is provided with a control device which, on the basis of predetermined set and/or calculated values, not only ensures optimum displacement of the intermediate rolls but, on the basis of the absolute value and direction of section and/or strip tension deviations, specifies adjusting forces for work and intermediate roll bending jacks to correct the said deviations, strip curvature errors occurring in the centre of the rolling stock being compensated essentially by changing the bending of the intermediate rolls and wall curvature errors being compensated by changing the bending of the work rolls.
