A method for controlling the temperature in motor vehicles, in which case controlling the temperature is understood to mean, for example, preheating the engine in order to avoid a cold start, maintaining the optimum operating temperature of the engine or preheating the passenger compartment of the motor vehicle. A latent heat accumulator is heated up by means of dissipated heat from the engine and heat is conducted away from it as required via a conduction system for a heat-transfer medium. A heat-exchanger arrangement for carrying out the method has a conduction system, which can be heated by dissipated heat from the engine, for a heat-emitting heat-transfer medium and a conduction system for a heat-absorbing conduction system, in which case both conduction systems have heat-transfer sections arranged in a common latent heat accumulator. When the dissipated heat is recovered from the cooling water, both conduction systems can be identical, in which case the latent heat accumulator is heated up to the optimum operating temperature by means of dissipated heat from the cooling water and heat is conducted to the cooling water again when heat is required.
