PURPOSE:To read dot characters with a high precision, by compressing a dot character signal segmented by a character segmenting device into dot arrangement information to generate a compressed character and comparing it with standard patterns to obtain resemblance degrees. CONSTITUTION:Dot characters on a form 1 are focused onto a photoelectric transducer 3 through an optical system. The output of the transducer 3 is made binary by a binary circuit 4 and is stored in a picture signal storage device 5. A character segmenting device 6 segments one-character components of picture signal from the device 5, and this signal is compressed by a compressed character generating device 7 and is outputted as a compressed character and is compared with each standard pattern in a standard pattern storage device 8, and the resemblance degree is calculated in a resemblance degree calculating device 9. A resemblance degree comparing device 10 compares calculation results calculated by the device 9 with one another to obtain a miximum resemblance degree, and a category corresponding to the standard pattern which give this maximum resemblance degree is outputted as the recognition result to an external storage device 11. |
