1,193,279. Filament-wound vessel. A. O. SMITH CORP. 28 July, 1967 [28 July, 1966], No. 34907/67. Heading B1X. A filament wound vessel comprises cylindrical wall section 1 having a hoop to axial stress ratio in the range 5:1 to 8:1 and composed of a helically wound fibrous strand bonded with a thermo-setting resin, head 2 connected to one end of the cylindrical wall section, annular head section 3 connected to the opposite end of the wall section, member 5 disposed within the opening in head section 3, and having an area of at least 50% of the crosssectional area of the cylindrical wall section, flexible sealing means 9 for sealing the space between member 5 and head section 3 while allowing relative movement between them, and rigid connecting means 4 secured between head 2 and member 5. The diameter of member 5 may be between 70% and 87% of the diameter of the cylindrical wall. A single tie rod 4 may be used or a plurality of rods inside or outside the vessel. The fibrous strand material may be mineral, synthetic, vegetable, animal or metal fibres, or may be woven fabric or braiding; examples are given. The resin may be an epoxy, polyester or urea-formaldehyde resin. The filaments are preferably wound at a helix angle of from 24‹ to 19¢‹ with respect to a transverse plane. |
