[Also in Division B5] An open-ended container 10 is closed by the formation under heat and pressure of a thermoplastics joint 33 and/or 22 around the overlapping portions of flanges 12 and a cover 3 and/or the overlapping portions of flanges 13 and cover 2. The joint may be strengthened by the provision of apertures in one or both portions through which the thermoplastics material may penetrate, Figs. 3 and 5-8 (not shown), or by the provision of ridges, Fig. 4 (not shown). The joint (322), Fig. 7 (not shown), may be confined within oppositely rolled overlapping portions (121, 221). Alternatively these portions may be rolled in the same direction each portion having a perforation, preferably of elongated form. Separation of the container and cover may be facilitated by the provision of a break (333) in the joint, Fig. 8 (not shown), such that the joint may be snapped into two parts (334, 332), Fig. 9 (not shown), and (331), Fig. 10 (not shown). Joint-forming materials mentioned are polypropylene, polyethylene and polyamides. The container 10 and covers 2, 3 may be of the same or different materials, e.g. a metal body closed by plastics covers, and the materials mentioned are plastics, glass, tinplate, aluminium, zinc, copper, light alloy or brass. |
