PURPOSE:To decrease the increase in internal pressure during charging of a sealed secondary battery containing aqueous electrolyte by either applying carbonaceous powder to or bringing carbonaceous sheets into contact with parts of negative electrodes used to constitute the battery. CONSTITUTION:Sintered positive nickel plates 1 and sintered negative cadmium plates 2 are alternately placed with separators 4 made of a nonwoven nylon fabric interposed. Next, sheets 3 formed by the use of mixture prepared by combining coconutshell active carbon powder with polytetrafluoroethylene used as a binding agent, are brought into contact with the back surfaces of negative plates 2 located at the ends before the thus assembled body is installed in a container 6. After that, electrolyte consisting of 35% aqueous caustic-potash solution is poured thereby constituting a sealed nickel-cadmium secondary battery. As a result, oxygen gas generated from the positive electrodes 1 during charging can be electrochemically reduced by using the sheets 3 as a catalyst. Consequently, easy sealing of the battery is secured by decreasing the increase in its internal pressure. |
