The mechanism turns tree trunks, particularly those with flats formed on two opposite sides. It has a holder movable at right angles to the transport direction of the trunk, and hinging on an axis extending in this direction. The hinge axis (M2) is at a predetermined distance from the central plane (M1) of the trunk (1), so that it is situated near the edge of the latter, typically near one side (4) and at the bottom corner, while its distance from the central plane can be equal to half the height (h) of the trunk after turning.
