PURPOSE:To obtain a detection element having high sesitivity to CH4, C4H10 and H2 as compared with a conventional one in which a ferric oxide powder is used, by molding and sintering a fine ferric oxide particle with a large specific surface area obtained by subjecting iron oxyhydroxide to heat treatment under a specific condition. CONSTITUTION:FeO(OH) is calcined at 300-700 deg.C to obtain easily crushable ferric oxide. This calcinate is crushed to form a fine powder with a specific surface area of about 100m<2>/g or more and said powder is subjected to final baking to obtain a gas sensor. A coil heater is provided around this sensor and the whole is covered with a metal net cap made of stainless steel to produce a gas detection element. By this method, the gas detection element having high sensitivity to CH4, C4H10 and H2 is obtained. |
