The marker enables the location of shipwrecked persons or persons lost overboard to be marked by sending a gas-filled balloon up from the same. The marker consists of a container (1) which is subdivided into two chambers (2, 3). A balloon envelope with a top lifting-gas cartridge (5) is tightly folded in the chamber (2). A safety element (13) prevents filling of the balloon (4) in the packed state and releases the filling valve (14) for the top lifting-gas cartridge (5) only when the latter leaves the container (1). The chamber (3) contains a bottom propellent-gas cartridge (10) which also enables the balloon envelope (4) to be filled. When the release cord (20) is pulled, the bottom cap (18) is pulled off, the water-sensitive valve (11) opens, and the bottom propellent-gas cartridge (10) pushes the propellent gas and the piston (8) upwards and outwards and fills the balloon envelope (4) with the propellent gas. The balloon envelope (4) is connected to a balloon rope (6) and climbs to the maximum extent of the balloon rope (6). <IMAGE>
