A process and an apparatus for the cleaning of the shaft of a chimney or a stack, by means of a brush, especially with metal bristles, fastened to a cable or similar flexible tension element, and also if necessary a metal ball or weighting ball, are to be arranged so that work is simplified. For this purpose, the brush is operated by means of the tension element from the shaft foot of the chimney and is lowered from above into the shaft of the chimney. The cable is guided on at least one deflecting roller above the shaft and through this to a bore or similar guide at the shaft foot through which the cable passes with play.
