The invention relates to new indolo¢2',3',3,4!pyrido¢2,1-b!,quinazoline- S-ones of formula I (I) and the pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof. In the formula R stands for hydrogen or C1-4 alkyl. Typical values for Rl, R2, R3, R4, R5 and R6 include hydrogen, halogen, C1-4 alkyl, C1-4 alkoxy, phenyl, cyano, C1-4 acyl, nitro, carboxy, C2-5 alkoxycarbonyl, amino and C1-4 acylamino. The compounds of formula I are substituted derivatives of Rutecarpine and, like Rutecarpine, are useful as diuretics and for influencing respiration and blood circulation.
