PURPOSE:To produce methyl alcohol at a low temperature under a low pressure, by introducing carbon monoxide and hydrogen into water or an organic solvent in the presence of a metallic porphyrin complex and a platinum catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Carbon monoxide is brought into contact with hydrogen to give methyl alcohol. In the process, CO2 is brought into contact with H2 in the presence of a metallic prophyrin complex of the formula (M is Fe, Zn, Mn, Cu, Co, Ni, etc.; R1-R4 are pheyl, H, methylpyridyl, etc.), e.g. tetraphenylporphyrin iron, and a platinum catalyst, e.g. a colloidal catalyst prepared by supporting platinum on polyvinylpyrrolidone, preferably containing a ligand having an intermediate coordination force between the CO and methyl alcohol for the metal in the metallic porphyrin complex such as imidazole or phosphine, to give the aimed methyl alcohol. The reaction is carried out at 0-100 deg.C under atmospheric pressure. |
