A bag-making machine in which tube sections are conveyed longitudinally and which comprises a bottom-making cylinder 1 on which the leading edge of the bottom ply is held by grippers 17 when the other ply has been lifted while a pulling-open device 36 pulls open the other ply to form an open-crossed bottom or block bottom, and lateral grippers 44, 441 retain both plies of the tube section 41 and the ends of the bottom centre line, is characterized in that there is a relative radial movement between the end grippers 17 and that part of the periphery of the cylinder 1 between the end grippers and the lateral grippers 44, 441, such movement being so controlled that the workpiece ply held by the end grippers is flat in the region between the end grippers and the lateral grippers during the pulling-open operation and is caused to contact the peripheral surface of the cylinder after the pulling open operation. In one embodiment the end grippers 17 are carried on levers 13, 131 forming part of a linkage controlled by fixed cams 10, 101 so that during pulling-out the grippers are moved outwardly of the surface of the cylinder 1 so that the bottom ply of the tube section between the end grippers 17 and lateral grippers 44, 441 lies in a plane tangential to the cylinder surface. The opening template 36 is controlled by a cam 23 to move so that it does not strike the grippers in their raised position. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the template is fixed as usual and the segment of the cylinder surface between the end grippers and the lateral grippers are moved radially inwardly during the pulling out operation so that the section of the bottom ply can lie in a flat plane across the recess so formed. The various linkages are adjustable so that bags of different sizes may be made on the same machine.
